The Courageous Tale of Harley the German Shepherd

The Courageous Tale of Harley the German Shepherd

Once upon a time in a peaceful neighborhood, a brave German Shepherd named Harley found himself facing an unexpected challenge. Harley, known for his noble and protective nature, was startled by the arrival of the neighbor’s little pug snuffling at the front door.

I, of course, was delighted. Harley, however, was terrified.  You see, despite Harley’s imposing size he was afraid of small dogs.  I’m not sure what the psychology of this was, whether he thought this tiny squash-faced, snorting dog was some type of canine demon, but regardless, with a yelp, Harley made a quick retreat to the backyard.

This was a time when Harley was an only dog. He was good friends with the neighbors German Shepherd named Lisa. Not sure what else to do, and feeling  alarmed that his human was ooooo-ing and awwww-ing over the gremlin dog at the door, he began barking in his “Lisa come over here and save me” tone.

And Lisa did come over. She was not alarmed by the neighbors waddling pug. She breezed right past the pint sized pup and headed to Harley’s rescue.

The pug soon became disenchanted with our yard and pattered back home, none the worse for his experience. Harley eventually came back in the house after making sure no more tiny hounds from hell had appeared, and after Lisa was called back home.

The pug never came back.  I have the feeling he wasn’t afraid, more like his curiosity had been satisfied about us. Harley almost always ran away from small dogs, which always cracked us up. So much for our “vicious” German Shepherd.
